Cathedral and Castle Tour

 

The day starts with a drive to see Elgin Cathedral, known as ‘the Lantern of the North’. It dates back to the 13th century but fell into ruins after the Reformation in 1560. VisitScotland describes the Cathedral as “one of Scotland’s most beautiful mediaeval buildings”.

 

Close by is Johnston’s of Elgin who have been making cashmere and fine woollen cloth, knitwear and accessories in Scotland since 1797. Their café also serves great coffee and delicious cakes!

 

Hidden away deep in the Spey Valley, Knockando Woolmill has been producing fine woollen products on its traditional machinery for more than 200 years. It was restored recently, and there is now a café which is today’s lunch stop. (All profits go to the Knockando Woolmill Trust to ensure the future of the Woolmill.)

 

Afterwards we travel to Ballindalloch for our last visit of the day. Ballindalloch Castle has been home to the MacPherson-Grant family since 1546. The gardens, which were laid out in the 19th century, are outstandingly beautiful.
